Inborn errors of metabolism are (more than 1000) disorders that are rare to very rare. Many metabolic diseases are discovered in childhood. In some cases, the first symptoms of an inborn error do not appear until adulthood. At MUMC+, patients with an inborn error of metabolism are treated by a specialized team consisting of internists, pediatricians, metabolic dieticians and clinical chemists.

Inborn errors of fructose metabolism

Fructose (or fruit sugar) is a sugar found naturally in fruits, many vegetables and honey. It is also a component of table sugar. Fructose is added to many foods to give them a sweet taste.

There are three congenital disorders in the processing of fructose. These disorders are treated by a team of experts, led by Professor Brouwers.
